Central extract ventilation systems ventilate a whole dwelling by extracting from all the wet rooms to a central fan which then discharges the stale air to atmosphere. Fresh air is introduced to the building via trickle vents in the windows or air bricks in the walls.
Central extract systems are an efficient way of removing humidity and stale air from a dwelling and are frequently controlled by means of a 3 speed switch or humidity controlled valves. This system runs 24/7.
Although cheaper to buy and install than a heat recovery system the stale air exhausted via a central extract system also exhausts heat from a building which in the case of a 4 bedroom family home can be up to 2 kW an hour (depending on usage and thermostat settings).
Normally we install backward curved central extract fans from the NCA190/70 range. Backward curved fans are better at the removal of airborne contaminants than the forward curved version.
